Will having a color palette make finding clothes easier?

I wish the answer to this question was yes. But the true answer is "Not always". It will make finding flattering clothes easier because you will have a guide to take with you. But it will not always be easy to find the colors you want. Fashion designers decide what colors they will make in a given season and that palette is usually fairly limited. Knowing what a difference color makes will make you a much fussier shopper...unwilling to buy and wear the color of the moment if it doesn't suit you.

Do you "do colors" for children?

I do not do colors for small children and am reluctant to do it even for teens. In general, teens are at a point in their lives where they are usually more interested in wearing whatever colors are in style then those that flatter them. I think an ideal minimum age for color analysis is 17 years old. Of course,  there are exceptions to that rule.

I live in another state. Do you travel to clients?

Yes.

I live in the city so do not drive or have a car. Can your studio be reached by public transportation?

There is train service from Boston's North Station to nearby Newburyport, just minutes away. There is also express bus service from Boston's Logan Airport and South Station.

I had a color analysis many years ago. Why should I do it again?

If many years have passed, your coloring has likely evolved with age. Also, if you were analyzed years ago you were probably typed using a system that was simplistic by today's standards. The state-of-the-art Essential Colors system and analysis methods allow for greater accuracy and individuality. It takes into account both your visual and energetic appearance.  Do you still carry and use the color swatches you were given years ago?  If not, that is a good sign they are not as accurate or as complete as they could be.  Color consultants have widely varying levels of ability, training, and experience. If you are not thrilled with your colors you owe it to yourself to have a new analysis.

What should I expect if I come to your studio?

The studio is located in Newbury, MA. about 10 miles north of Boston. Come in comfortable clothing. Bring but don't wear your makeup.  Don't wear a turtleneck top or a bright color near your face. White, beige, black or some other neutral is best. If that's not possible, your clothing will be covered with a cape. Try not to arrive early. If you do will need to wait in your car until your appointment as there is no waiting area inside.

Can I bring a friend along with me?  Absolutely. But only one friend please. The studio is small.

Can I come with a tan?

Yes if it's a slight tan. If you have a dark tan it's best to wait for it to fade. Artificial tans may result in an inaccurate color analysis since they can alter the natural tone of your skin. If you have a significant tan, wait until your coloring is faded....unless you plan to stay tanned year round.

What will I leave with?

For one thing, a new understanding and appreciation for what's unique and beautiful about your coloring. Unless you do not wish it, I will apply makeup to enhance your coloring and express your personal style. If you have a seasonal color analysis, you will likely take your color swatches home that very day. Custom and body color palettes must be assembled to order and will be sent directly to you in about a week. You may also purchase 'Color Perfect' makeup in your colors at the studio if desired.

What should I bring?

Come without makeup but bring the makeup colors you are currently wearing. If you must come with makeup on, you can remove it once your are here. If your hair color is now different from the natural color it was in your 20's, please bring a picture of the natural color.

Do you facilitate makeovers like those we see on television shows like What Not To Wear?

Yes and no. TV makeover shows pay little attention to their subject's natural coloring and personal style. TV stylists often make recommendations selected to make as dramatic a transformation as possible. Changing a brunette to a blonde or a red head for example. This makes good TV but doesn't always  I will show you how great you can look with the right choices in clothing and makeup and suggest a hair color change if necessary. Sometimes I advise clients to stop coloring their hair because the color they are spending money to achieve does not flatter their skin.

Having a wardrobe "consultant" seems indulgent and even a bit intimidating. Convince me that I should invest in this service.

Go to your closet and pull out the clothes that

a) you never wear

b) you wear but they don't make you feel

    attractive.

c) still have tags on them

Add up on paper how much you spent for these things. If you are spending hundreds or thousands of dollars on 'mistakes' you will be thrilled with the results of working with a wardrobe consultant. Read Toby Winter's article about her wardrobe consultation experience.

Why do you place so much emphasis on color?

I prefer that all of my wardrobe clients begin their self discovery with a color analysis. This provides a color plan for everything that will follow--makeup, hair, clothing, jewelry.....everything that will adorn your body.

I've noticed that some web sites offer an on-line color analysis. Do you offer this?

It is tempting for some to offer long distance or 'on line' color analysis but after doing professional color analysis for 22 years, I can't imagine how one can analyze someone's coloring with a high degree of accuracy without seeing them in person and following a testing process under controlled lighting. Part of the analysis requires your physical presence. I liken it to trying to get your annual dental exam done online. The opportunity for an incomplete or inaccurate result is too great. Therefore I do not offer or recommend online or self color analysis.

Isn't color analysis just a fad from the 70's?

The 70's marked the introduction of color analysis to the general public with the publication of the book Color Me Beautiful, a book that introduced a simplistic system for typing human coloring into 4 categories. I liken approach to choosing between a size small, medium, large or extra large.  Writings on the concepts behind color analysis can be traced as far back as 1920. Color Analysis has passed its fad stage and is now a proven method of improving ones appearance. It is a permanent part of modern culture.

What is the real benefit of color analysis?

Simply...the right colors make you look better. Often significantly better (see my Before and After page on this site). No surgery required. No $95 lotion you must rub on your face twice a day. No injections, peels, or sun tanning necessary. Beautiful results just by choose clothing in the colors that flatter and balance your natural coloring You and everyone who sees you will see a skin that appears brighter, clearer and more even.  Instantly! Guaranteed! Those qualities make one look younger, healthier, well groomed and well rested.  Expert color analysis will identify these precise shades for you. Shop with your swatches to make sure your color selections are accurate.  An additional benefit is the natural relationship your colors will have to each other. You'll be able to mix and match colors with confidence because all of your palette colors have a natural compatibility due to a common color intensity and/or temperature.

I'm not one for following fashion. My lifestyle requires only casual clothes. Why would I need a color analysis?
Color analysis is NOT about fashion. It's about identifying specific colors that enhance and support your natural coloring. The benefits are money saved and an improved appearance, regardless of what your wardrobe needs are.

Who gets their colors done?

My clients range from 20 to 80, they are mostly female but many women convince their boyfriends, husbands, sons, etc., to have their own colors done and these men are always thrilled with the experience and the help it gives them to dress well and look great. It makes a unique college graduation or wedding gift for a young man. One thing that amazes men is seeing how the wrong colors emphasize their beard shadow. Some of my male clients have been a Boston Police detective, college president, jazz musician, politician, postal worker, UPS driver, architect, senior long distance runner, and construction worker.

What can I expect when I wear my 'ideal' colors?

Your skin will look better. Your eyes will show up more. Your hair may look different - even though you have made no change in the color. People say things like "What's different about you?  "Did you lose weight" or "What have you been doing to your skin? It looks great." In fact, if you don't get these kinds of reactions after an analysis, it is because:
